When a swimmer’s best time is stored as “1:02.4” in one season’s data and “62.40” in the next, the record board cannot rank them correctly — and a legitimate school record can sit invisibly below a slower mark simply because the units do not match. Athletic record units standardization is the practice of defining one official format for every measurable category — times, distances, scores, heights, weights — and applying it consistently at entry, during historical migration, and before any mark appears on a public display.
